What is horseshoes?
Horseshoes is an outdoor game played by two teams aiming horseshoes at a stake, usually placed 40 feet away. Teams of two (or just one person) play against each other pitching the horseshoes one at a time. After all the horseshoes have been tossed, the participants walk over to the stake, score the game and toss back to the other stake. Horseshoes is the ultimate leisure sport.
Materials:
- 2 stakes
- optional backboard
- 4 horseshoes
- scoreboards
History:
Horseshoes has been around since Roman empire, as soldiers passing their free time, tossed metal rings over stakes. However, rules felt that these games distracted men from their military training as so it was banned in 1388. Yet, by the 16th century, peasants were found playing and brought it over to North America.
From the Revolutionary war to the backyard, soldiers took the game home after the wars as it soon became a family sport.
How to play:
- Each team stands in front of a stake and throws two horseshoes at their stake.
- 1 point is given to a shoe that is within 6 inches of the stake. 2 points is given for a shoe touching the stake, which is often called a “leaner.” 3 points are given to the shoe encircling the stake, also known as a “ringer.”
- Keep tossing until all the players have gone, counting as an inning.
- Play until one team has reached 40 points or until 40 horseshoes have been thrown
