Pool vs. Snapnames vs. NameJet vs. Godaddy
by thedayofgames on Dec.20, 2010, under Uncategorized
Dayofgames.com was finally released by the knucklehead who has been holding it for a couple years. He never had any content on it. I never approached him to buy it. I just sort of hoped he would go away. Finally, he failed to renew. The WhoIs status finally got to pendingDelete and I figured I would just grab it once that 5 day wait was over. I then got a little ansy, so I registered the Backorder with GoDaddy. Then I got even MORE ansy and started doing some research. I discovered that the GoDaddy Backorder was 100% worthless and that I had just wasted $20 (I actually called back later and asked for a refund, which was granted). After my research I realized that the BIG 3 OTHER GUYS are not to be F’d with when grabbing a domain. So a smart domain purchaser should just register with all 3… and pray that it does not go to auction.
So… I registered with Pool.com and SnapNames.com and NameJet.com
SnapNames scored the domain and it didn’t go to auction. Rock and roll. It’s been a day, and I still haven’t received any notification from Pool or NameJet, but I assume those will come on Monday.
Also of note, I received unsolicited offers from 2 other random companies about buying the domain from them. I never even responded to those emails. I didn’t want them to know that I had any desire of purchasing the domain, or that I even existed. I assume they just would have done the exact same auction process, except flipped the domain to me for triple the price.
Now I just need to wait 60 days to flip it over to GoDaddy away from whoever the heck has it. Done and done!
If you are deciding between backordering a domain with Namejet or Pool or Snapnames or GoDaddy:
Don’t waste your money with GoDaddy
Register with Pool, NameJet and SnapNames.
Wait to see if you have an auction to deal with.
*make sure you set the MINIMUM bid. You will ALWAYS have a chance to up your bid if it goes to auction. Some of the auction places will just have the purchase go through at your $500 bid amount… when you should have just bought the domain for $59.
Some People Are Born Awesome… and with chest hair
by thedayofgames on Dec.04, 2010, under Uncategorized
This new David Hasselhoff TV show commercial is epic. All fans of chest hair, and embracers of the word “awesome” … Rejoice! It’s the perfect commercial. An incredibly hilarious use of chest hair, and the great catch phrase — “Some people Are Born Awesome”.
If you overuse the word AWESOME, like we do at The Day of Games, then this ad is brilliant.
Enjoy:

The “High Five” Patent
by thedayofgames on Sep.01, 2010, under Uncategorized
As a guy running a business (www.thedayofgames.com) based on the playing of games, I am constantly thinking of ideas for improving existing games or simply inventing my own. Every now and then I will like an idea so much that I quickly do some research into the invention… 1) Has anyone else thought of this? 2) What would be a cool name? 3) Would it be cost-effective to produce? 4) Is there an existing patent on the idea? etc. etc.
This afternoon I was reviewing some patents when I came across this absolute gem of a patent: “APPARATUS FOR SIMULATING A ‘HIGH FIVE’”
Classic. I can’t believe this thing was patented! What a spectacularly terrible invention! It generally costs about $10,000 or more to have your invention turned into a patent (legal fees, legal fees, and more legal fees). The production costs are a completely separate matter. Was this thing ever actually produced? Where can I buy one? Is it rude if I use my High Fiving Apparatus to slap hands instead of a friend who is sitting with me? Can I take this thing to sporting events? Will it fist bump? What about low-fives? So many questions!
Albert Cohen of Troy, NY must have been an avid sports fan with no money to attend actual events, or no friends to watch games with, because why would anyone go through such great lengths to come up with something so ridiculous. I have been an incredibly lucky guy when it comes to sporting events, I’ve attended Olympic events, World Cup games, MLB playoffs, NCAA Sweet 16 games, soccer games in South America, NBA playoffs, and a zillion other sporting events which have thrilled me beyond belief. In EVERY SINGLE INSTANCE where something AMAZING has happened I have high-fived the stranger next to me. In about a dozen cases I can think of, I have hugged the strangers next to me. In a few rare instances, I have even dog-piled with complete strangers. Maybe Albert was scared of strangers? Here is some of the text from the patent which I am sure you will find entertaining:
Quoted directly from the patent:
————————————————–
“BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
During a televised sporting event, a “high five: is commonly shared between fans to express the joy and excitement of a touchdown, home run, game-winning basket, birdie or other positive occurrence. Unfortunately, as known in the art, a “high five” requires the mutual hand slapping of two participants, wherein a first participant slaps an upraised hand against the elevated hand of a second participant. As such, a solitary fan is unable to perform a “high five” to express excitement during a televised sporting event.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:
In order to avoid the disadvantages of the prior art, the present invention provides a pivotable, self-righting hand-arm configuration for simulating a “high five” when struck by the hand of a user”

Brilliant! Sign me up for one of these hand slapping machines.
New Game to Play: STICKZEE!
by thedayofgames on Jul.27, 2010, under Products, Uncategorized
Ever played Polish Horseshoes? Now you can buy a new polish horseshoes game from The Day of Games. It’s called Stickzee! It comes with 2 adjustable platforms (3 sizes), 1 175 gram professional disc (ultimate quality), a carrying case, 2 koozies, and a bottle opener. This is a great game. It’s pretty simple to play too. All you need to do is stand behind your Stickzee platform and throw the disc at your opponents platform. If you can knock over a can placed on top of the platform, and it hits the ground… 2 points. If the disc is “catchable” and the opposing team fails to catch the disc…. 1 more point! Throw back and forth until 1 team hits 21. It is also customary to hold a drink in one hand so that only the other can be used for catching and throwing. Some people call this game polish horseshoes, or frisbeer, or beersbee, or spanish horseshoes, or all kinds of names. Now you can buy a Stickzee set and go play!

Bocce League in San Diego
by thedayofgames on Mar.24, 2010, under Uncategorized
Is this a search for an awesome San Diego Bocce Ball League? Lucky you. I have the answer. Google brought you here. Congrats. If you want to play bocce with other your people in a rec league setting — you should join the DogDaze Leisure Sports League. This rec league is for 20 and 30 Somethings and is currently in its 2nd year. Last year the bocce games were played in Pacific Beach on the sands on Law Street – overlooking the pacific ocean and the sunset… but this year the venue will likely be moving to Kate O Sessions. Although there will be no beach bocce sunset play, there is now the fun of playing bocce on grass. So the DogDaze leagues aren;t exactly just a bocce league, they include Bocce, Horseshoes, Cornhole, Ladder Toss, and a bunch of games that generally involve throwing things at other things. This is truly the best setting to relax after work. This is an alternative to the VAVI Sports League that you were in last year. Its not competitive kickball. Its just a bunch of people, hanging out, having a good time, and then all going out to a bar together. Happy hours in San Diego are always a good time.
This sound good to you? Check out – Dogdaze Leisure Sports Leagues.

If you enjoy OTL in San Diego then you are the kind of person who will enjoy the SD bocce league. Meet new people in town, make new friends, have fun with your current group of buddies. The Dogdaze games are so simple – EVERYONE CAN PLAY THEM.
This is also a pretty cheap rec league in San Diego. For under $50 bucks you get to leave the house and enjoy your time after work!
